What happens if your computer gets stolen?

My wife just recently had a friend get her computer stolen.  You know what else is missing, all of her pictures.  What a nightmare.  Carbonite is a good service, I use it and like it.  There compitiion is Mozy and I am looking forward to trying them next year.  Carbonite is $55 for unlimited data per year.

Thanks to Leo Laporte for getting me to finally try Carbonite.

A review from a wonderful client

I know its self serving, but so is this whole site. Below is an email that a client of mine sent after I fixed her PC this last weekend. Stacie and her husband were wondeful clients, it was great to help them out.

Ryan
Thank you so much for all the work you did on our computer this weekend. We truly appreciate all the extra you did for us. When my computer initially went out I asked all around for a referral to a good reliable computer person that would assist us we our computer problems. However no one really knew of anyone. I say all of this let you know that I will definitely tell others of the excellent service you provided and will refer others to you.

Thanks again....
Stacie

Review from a recent customer

Ryan,

Thank you for making what at first looked like a nightmare become a minor technical blip in my life. When my laptop crashed, I saw three years of documents that I had created flash before my very eyes. I was particularly appreciative and impressed with the fact that you made several visits to my house and were always punctual. Though I hope I won't need to secure your services again, I now know who to call if I do!

Try Mashable

iPhone and Android

Looking at the Android and iPhone race right now, one thing seems clear to me. In 10 years, when people look back at the Android / iPhone race. One thing will be clear, Apple exclusivity contract with AT&T will be reason why Android was able to get into the market and rapidly gain market share and actually compete with the iPhone.

Here's my reasoning: The iPhone is great, and so is Android, so how to choose? Many people either don't want to leave there carrier, they are scared to death of the nightmare that is AT&T, or they are tired of waiting for Apple to release the phone to other carriers. Mix that with lots of Android models and price points combined with a public that is increasingly warming up to the smart phone concept.

So while the exclusivity deal with AT&T is a huge boon for Apple, it may also be one for Android.

Great Wi-Fi Analyzer for Android

I tested this on my Droid and it is quite impressive. It should be very helpful for setting up routers.

Review from a recent client

A recent client of mine wrote a review, here it is:

Very few people who own a computer manage to avoid completely the countless dybbuks of the cyber world, whether they are crashed hard drives, nasty viruses, or horror tales about ISP servers. We in River Park and nearby areas are blessed with reliable help in the person of Ryan Petta of East Sacramento Computer Repair. Ryan has installed a new hard drive for me, untangled malfunctioning software, and (most importantly for me) did absolutely heroic battle with that unresponsive beast, A.T.& T., in setting up a new internet connection. When you have the PC blues, give Ryan a call. I think you will be pleased.

How To Fix The McAfee Restart Update Problem

Lifehacker has a fix posted here.

McAfee's fix is listed here.

I personally recommend Microsoft's anti-virus product called Microsoft Security Essentials.  It's free and very effective.  In my experience it does not bog down the computer like other anti- viruses can.

Fixes: Backspace No Longer Deleting Selected Words

In Microsoft Word, if you highlight a word and then hit the backspace key or any key for that matter, the word should be deleted. If it stops doing that, check this setting, it should fix the problem

Tools > Options > Edit tab > check mark the option "Typing replaces selection"

Don't Pay for Anti-Virus

Want to save $60 and make your computer run faster? Instead of purchasing or renewing Norton or McAfee, download and install Microsoft Security Essentials. This is Microsoft's new anti-virus application that is completely free for Windows users and it works great.
